Depends on the build. Right now I'm actually playing A/D with critical defenses... it works quite well as it is 92% to crit causing loads of dmg with scythe and refreshing critical defenses every time. For a PvE dervish you could run D/Rt and self splinter yourself... I tend to like D/A for shadow stepping and shadow arts skill.... deaths retreat or heart of shadow.

depends on what you want to use them for. http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page can show you the possible combinations for each class, along with some pros and cons. In the end though, pretty much every class can benefit from every other class in some way, all it takes is some imagination, determination, and knowledge.

Lots of combinations....but I'll start out with a dervish.

D/A = Lyssa Dervish for killing people fast (preferably spell casters)
D/P = Not sure which avatar it is, but the tank build spear chucker works quite well

P/A = Shadowgon build using Spear Swipe + Stunning Strike for good dazing

A/D = Grenth's Grasp cripple or Critical Defenses + the scythe stuff
A/P = Critical spear chucker
A/Me = Degen assassin that usually implies alot of conditions
A/W = Tiger stance or Flurry to throw in for fast spiking
A/Rt = NIghtmare and Splinter Weapon along with Ancestor's Rage for good AoE spiking
A/R = Critical bow interrupter
A/Mo = Restful breeze or other healing skills
A/N = Insidious Parasite and other stuff for anti-melee or degen

Boy - I used to struggle with this when I was first starting out!

I assume you're still relatively early in the game, because otherwise it really doesn't matter what 2ndary you choose. Once you have "ascended", meaning having completed Hunted! in NF, and you have done the first of the "Building the Base" quests, you can pay 500g and switch your 2nd. Once you have unlocked a 2nd for that character, you can freely change it any time you are in a town or outpost. That said, it is worthwhile to unlock every profession as a potential 2nd, or any time you simply want to try a different D/x build! In short: you're not stuck with whatever you choose as your secondary!

D/N's can be a lot of fun. D/Mo's do quite well. Guildwiki's "PvX" page has lots of builds, rated by readers, and is an excellent source for potential builds. The discussion pages are very good resources to get a feel for why a particular build is good or bad, sometimes due to the difference between PvP and PvE skill usages.

Bottom line: its only a game. It's all about what you have fun doing. Try one out! If you don't like it, you can always change.

(btw: if you have Prophecies and have beaten Augury Rock, there are 2ndary profession quests that are worth 1k exp. This way, you don't have to pay any gold, and actually gain XP, while unlocking additional 2nds!)
